Otto Nordenskjold led a Swedish expedition that finished up with an Antarctic story as epic as any: the mother ship lost in ice, a divided expedition with parties surviving a winter in three separate places, and a lucky rescue helped by a warm spring.

ADOLF ERIK NORDENSKIÖLD (1832–1901) var en av sin tids främsta forskningsresande och ledde ett flertal expeditioner till bland annat Spetsbergen och  Nordenskjölds expedition som varade åren 1895-98 sträckte sig från Eldslandets stäpper och sydbokskogar, över Anderna och upp till Atacamaöknen i norra  Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld (1832-1901) studerade och kartlade polarområdet och bröt väg för kännedom om den arktiska regionen. Otto Nordenskjöld (1869-1928) Otto Nordenskjöld föddes den 6 december 1869 på släktegendomen Sjögelö i Hässleby socknen, Småland. Han var systerson till en annan känd polarforskare inom släkten Nordenskiöld, dvs Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld känd från Vega-expeditionen. For example, in 1903, the Nordenskjold expedition was forced to wait ten months to be rescued on the volcanic Paulet Island.
